Heat treatment
- Solution treatment: 900 ± 14 °C, hold ≥ 2 h, oil quench.
- Age hardening: 720 ± 14 °C, hold ≥ 16 h, air cool.
Applications
ASTM A453 Gr.660 is widely used for high-temperature fasteners such as bolts, studs and nuts in gas turbines, PWR nuclear plants, petrochemical pressure vessels, and aero-engine structural joints.
Summary
ASTM A453 Gr.660 is a high-performance precipitation-hardening stainless steel that combines high strength at elevated temperature with excellent corrosion resistance, making it an ideal choice for critical fasteners in severe service.
In which environments are the fasteners of ASTM A453 Gr. 660 applicable?
- High temperature & high pressure: gas turbines, nuclear and steam-turbine plants, chemical reactors, etc. Continuous service up to ~700 °C with outstanding oxidation resistance.
- Cryogenic conditions: retains toughness and strength at -196 °C and below; suitable for LNG equipment and other low-temperature systems.
- Corrosive media: highly resistant to oxidation, stress-corrosion cracking and corrosion fatigue; performs well in marine, chemical and oil-&-gas environments.
Are there any cheaper alternative materials available?
Although Gr.660 offers premium performance, its price is high. For less extreme duties the following cost-effective substitutes may be considered:
| Alternative | Characteristics | Suitable environment | Relative cost |
| 316L stainless | Good corrosion resistance, lower high-temperature strength than 660 | Medium/low temperature, corrosive (chemical, food, marine) | Much lower |
| 17-4 PH (630) | Hardenable by heat treatment, moderate strength | Medium temperature, mildly corrosive | Medium |
| B8 stainless (ASTM A193 B8) | Conventional high-temperature bolting grade | ≤600 °C, pressure vessels, valves | Lower than 660 |
| PTFE-coated alloy steel | Carbon or low-alloy steel substrate with fluoropolymer coating | Low/medium temperature, corrosive, non-oxidising | Significantly lower; good for structural fasteners |
Recommendations
- For service >700 °C, highly corrosive media, or cryogenic conditions, Gr.660 remains the irreplaceable first choice.
- For temperatures below ~600 °C or moderate corrosion, consider 316L, 17-4 PH or B8.
- When tight cost control is required and the environment is corrosive but not high-temperature, PTFE-coated fasteners offer an economical solution.
If you can provide the specific operating temperature, pressure and medium, we can help you evaluate the most appropriate alternative material.
